Social Media Mindset Part II: Who to Follow

Since the world is on lockdown due to COVID-19 social media is playing a larger roll in the daily entertainment of people’s lives. Now more than ever it is important to monitor what you intake. In my previous Social Media Mindset article, I discussed the ins and outs of social media. This time I want to go more in-depth about who to follow and who to unfollow!

Whenever I talk to people about their social media anxiety who they follow is usually the issue along with their mindset around why they follow. They compare themselves to people they follow that are always traveling or have large homes and lots of luxury things. I always say to them "you don’t know how that person got those things". They could be in debt up to their ears, or they could have been sponsored, that could be their best friend Gucci. You never know. My next question is always “why do you follow those people if they make you feel that way”? Usually, there are crickets, followed by well it’s just not that simple. I say why not? What you see is your choice! It’s all up to you. So how do you know who to follow you ask? Let me tell you:

Who NOT To Follow:

It’s important to balance your intake. So if you follow 10 celebrity news gossip sites, you might need to cut it down to 5. Don’t follow anyone who promotes violence, racism, or negativity. If their content is always depressing or triggering to you you should unfollow. If you can identify someone as a hater, or the content doesn’t appeal to any of your interests, you should unfollow. If someone is inauthentic or not being honest about how they live and the things they do, unfollow them.

I also think it’s important to identify why you are unfollowing people, especially if you know them. If someone’s content makes you, jealous, envious, or angry ask yourself why? Are you being a hater? Are you mad because they are somewhere you are not? Have you looked at yourself and figured out what you could do to be in a similar place and why you aren’t already there? I’ll leave you with these quotes: “Wherever you find yourself… at some point in time you made an appointment to be there” -Les Brown

“Life has no limitations except the ones you make” -Les Brown

Who To Follow:

I’m a big believer in manifestation, representation, and speaking things into existence. With that comes what you are feeding yourself daily. What you do today dictates who you will be in 5 years. I view who you follow as part of what you are feeding yourself.

I follow accounts that are inspiring to me and appeal to everything I’m interested in. For me, this looks like female entrepreneurs and CEO’s. Accounts about wealth building, thought leadership, and financial & life couches. Accounts about luxury and leisurely living. Astrology, Spirituality and Therapy accounts. Fashionable “IT” girls and accounts about having great style. Lastly, I follow inspirational and motivational accounts. Of course, I have brands I love or plan to buy from along with some celebrity gossip accounts sprinkled in as well. But for the most part, I follow people who live a life I aspire to live so I can see all the possibilities of how to get there. It also helps to know how they do things so you can start implementing said things in your life and live in a manner that allows you to be content with yourself and where you are but you can also be excited about the future.

I hope this serves you and enlightens your perspective. What are your favorite accounts to follow, comment below? Happy Easter everyone!

XOXO,
