The District Cup: 2nd Annual
Atmosphere: The polo atmosphere is very WASPish (Affluent people usually white with old money). Polo is interesting to watch because it’s very quick, it consists of six rounds called ”chukkers”. I will say it is a fun filled day event perfect on a summer weekend. Despite the heat, the atmosphere is laissez-faire and involves lots of day drinking.
Food & Drink: I was pleasantly surprised by what my ticket afforded me. Most tickets only afford you entry to events unless you purchase a VIP package. But not this event. The $99 ticket afforded us drinks, food, and dessert for the entire day. The food wasn’t sparse, there was multiple tables with sandwiches, pastas, salads, cookies, brownies, fruit, cheese, and crackers. The rośe was flowing and they had local liquor companies onsite to make specialty cocktails and drinks.
Attire: Polo attire is like derby attire but can also be a little more casual. At minimum, wear your Sunday’s best which is always a good rule of thumb for spectator sport that include betting; like horse & dog races, polo matches, etc. Light fabrics and silhouettes are the names of the game along with a good hat. The usual polo colors and patterns consist of: pastels and bright colors, sear sucker and stripe. I wore a black lace number from Nasty Gal with a fascinator. I received several compliments about my outfit choice with most stating “they wouldn’t have thought of wearing black but that I looked so chic & elegant”. Technically wearing black is a polo faux pas, but you know me… I like making a statement! My date and I were named best dressed by multiple people. .
Experience: I don’t normally watch sports on tv. I prefer them live. The excitement of polo is like a basketball game as far as the sport, not necessarily how people react. The best way to describe it is a boozy outdoor day party, with a sporting event for entertainment. In between the quick rounds, there is a DJ playing music, this is the time to go refresh your drinks and get another plate. Or, you can always socialize with friends unless it’s the halftime point where they ask the crowd to get on the field and stomp out all the divots to refresh the field. It’s an enjoyable day. It’s a different way of spending your Saturday but also great exposure to an old-fashioned sport and a highbrow crowd.
XOXO,
